slicing the divide another way

Apropos of the incomparable Josh Marshall's impatience with the argument that somehow the 48% of the country that voted for Kerry doesn't matter because somehow those people aren't really Americans, a weekly paper out of Seattle (80% Kerry) cuts to the chase - cities are progressive, and rural areas are not. Places along the edges of the country, and with a lot of diversity, tend to have a better understanding that there's a world out there, and that we need to live in it. We aren't part of a nation - we're part of an archipelago.

Coming as I do from a rural family and fundamentalist background, I'm not convinced that it's that simple (I'll have more to say about this as I try and sort it all out). But the detailed demographics are striking - and Wonkette's take on the reaction is amusing.
