The report on NPR this morning about the latest obliteration of tiny towns on the Iraqi-Syrian border by our fighting boys and girls mentions that the name of the operation is, ummm...,
Operation Steel Curtain.
It's the new century, so I guess we should move to steel. But it's more than a little (sorry, can't resist) ironic that in a month where the CIA appropriates torture chambers from the old Soviet empire, we decide to launch an operation that invokes a Soviet-era concept in the Middle East without thinking twice. I can only assume that whoever came up with that name is too young to remember the propaganda of a generation ago. It's a little creepy.
